History: The nation was originally a bunch of separate states run by the richest and most powerful local landowners, circa 1400-1750. When Ryudinia came to invade, the nation was embroiled in centuries of feudal conflict, and stood no chance against the invaders. After the recall of Ryundinian forces and the freedom given to the nation of Berstal, circa 1915, the richest merchant family hired a mercenary army to seize the capital city and take control, using their economic influence to keep regions in line. That government was formalized into the Berstalic Empire, but dissolved as soon as the first economic panic hit the nation about ten months later. The military then took over the government under martial law, and only gave power up at the face of a wave of peasant revolts, around the year 1918. The merchant families agreed to bail out the remainder of the government if a republican form of government was installed. Their method allowed for the election of a Protector, a Sub-Protector, and a Domistar every 10 years. This system was designed to keep the members of the rich families in power, while giving the illusion of a democratic system to the populace. The Protector controls foreign policy, the aim of the nation as a whole, and serves as the chief commander for the military. The Sub-Protector controls all domestic policy, including financial and fiscal policy. The Domistar serves as the chief judge of the judicial system, as well as the chief executor of the nation. Eventually, the Protectorate government was installed in 1919, and the first elections concluded shortly before 1920.
